Mortise Locks

We understand the importance of security. Everyone should be able to feel safe in their own home, and this is why we provide cost effective, high quality security solutions across the Gloucestershire area. If you have a wooden front door, it can sometimes be fitted with only a night latch, or Yale type lock, to protect it. This is inadequate for full security, as doesn't provide complete protection from break-in or damage. Adding a mortise lock can help improve this and is often a necessary addition for most home insurance providers.

We can install mortise locks of two different varieties. There is the traditional deadlock, which is comprised of a bolt and a keyhole. These locks work by moving into the door frame itself to unlock and lock the door. An alternate type of mortise lock is the sash lock, which functions slightly differently. This uses handles as well as a latch, meaning that in order to actually unlock the door, you must turn the handles. Some believe that this form of mortise lock is more secure, but it is actually dependent on which is better for your door.

The main reason that these locks are secure is due to the fact that they are comprised of many different levers within the lock itself. As there are multiple levers within a mortise lock, they are much more difficult to pick, and therefore are more likely to protect your home against intruders. As a requirement for many insurance providers, a British Standard 5 Lever lock should be fitted to your door. Here at Locks & Keys, we fit them as a standard with every installation for an external door, giving you and your family peace of mind.

Euro cylinders for uPVC and composite doors

This type of door typically requires that you lift the handle before you can turn the key to lock it.
When we replace these locks, we only use anti snap euro cylinders or better. We've been to too many properties where entry has been gained by a euro cylinder lock being snapped and won't fit the less secure type.
If you are replacing your own lock, please check that they are anti-snap cylinders, we say to do this because a common type of break in through these types of doors in the is from a method called lock snapping, with anti snap locks you don't have to worry about this happening to you!

If you have a pair of patio doors we can make both locks work on the same key for ease of use.
Or make all the euro cylinders - front door, back door etc all work from one key if this is easier for you.

We also supply British Standard euro cylinders which some insurance companies require you to have on external doors.
